Owner of Surrey Beds waves good-bye to Dreams Bed Superstore
Upon hearing the news of Dreams - the bed superstore - going into administration last week, Jerry Cheshire, Managing Director of Surrey Beds flung open his doors to hundreds of customers whose dreams had quickly turned into nightmares.
Surrey Beds was founded in 2001, with two stores – one on Sutton’s busy high street (opposite Asda), and another at 1 Old Lodge Lane in Purley. With two showrooms spanning over 6,000 square foot, Surrey Beds’ only competitor for many years was Dreams, the bed superstore, based in Sutton’s St Nicholas Centre – which has now been closed since the bed chain went into administration on 6th March 2013.
Jerry Cheshire, Managing Director Surrey Beds shares his positivity about the local retail outlook: “Since 2001, we’ve seen a steady flow of business, and since 6th March, it’s become even more evident that Dreams were attracting a lot of local customers, who are now coming to us.
It’s only natural for consumers to go to big high street brands that they trust, but it’s only now that they can see that preconceptions such as this can sometimes end in tears. We’re not sure how many customers have been left without beds or mattresses that they had on order, but we’re sure a few people’s dreams have probably turned into nightmares.”
We know what local customers want – they want reassurance that they can leave the showroom on the day they come in with the bed or mattress of their choice – this is something that the big guys just can’t do. Luckily we can, and that’s probably the biggest reason for us still being here today!”
Cllr Richard Clifton, Sutton Council’s Lead Member for Revenues and Benefits and Trading Standards said: “We are dedicated to assisting local people who have fallen victim when retailers cease to trade leaving a trail of lost orders and failed contracts. We know that in the current economic climate more and more businesses face an uncertain future so it’s a breath of fresh air that a smaller business is thriving.
“I would like to remind residents that if they have lost money as a result of Dreams going out of business and have paid more that £100 on credit, they may have some protection under the Consumer Credit Act. They can get advice by contacting the Citizens Advice consumer service on 08454 040506.”
